Some days my job is easy, some days it's hard. As a Criminal Defense Attorney, in either spoken or unspoken form I get the question, "How can you do what you do?"
Usually, having a tendency for the flippant, if someone actually voices the question to me, it goes something like this:
[Ignorant Questioner]:"How can you defend criminals?!?"
[ME]:"I get paid lots of money."
[Ignorant Questioner]:"How do you sleep at night with that attitude?!?"
[ME]:"I put the money in my pillow."
I don't really feel that way about it. But it's not usually worth the time to try and have intelligent conversation about fundamental fairness, the protection of the innocent, grace and mercy with people who would even ask such a question.
A recent blog entry by Jamie Spencer actually sums things up nicely I think.
